Tax

Our Tax services support organisations and individuals in managing complex tax obligations, significant transactions and exposure to SARS review or challenge. We provide technically grounded advisory, compliance and dispute-resolution support that helps clients identify material tax matters early, maintain accurate compliance and establish defensible tax positions. Our tax leadership brings close to three decades of taxation, risk and corporate governance experience, including extensive experience within SARS and senior private-sector roles.

Why It Matters

Organisations and individuals must comply with complex tax legislation while considering the effect of tax decisions on transactions, cash flow, financial reporting and governance. Regulatory scrutiny and cross-border activity place greater emphasis on accurate compliance, appropriate documentation and supportable tax positions. Effective tax support helps clients manage exposure, make informed decisions and respond appropriately when matters are reviewed or challenged by SARS.

Tax Advisory

Our tax advisory services help organisations and individuals understand the tax consequences of transactions, structures and commercial decisions before positions are implemented or reported. Explore our tax advisory services below.

We advise companies, shareholders, business owners and individuals on the interpretation and application of South African tax legislation. Our support may cover transactions, ownership and funding structures, income and expenditure, capital gains, distributions, investments, remuneration and significant personal or business events.

We advise on the South African tax implications of inbound and outbound investment, international expansion, cross-border services, foreign income, financing and ownership structures. Our work may address tax residence, source, permanent establishments, withholding taxes, foreign tax relief and applicable Double Taxation Agreements, with support from HLB member firms where local jurisdictional input is required.

We assist multinational groups in assessing the pricing and tax treatment of cross-border transactions between connected persons or associated enterprises. Our services may include risk assessments, policy development and supporting documentation for transactions involving goods, services, financing, intellectual property and other intercompany arrangements.

We perform tax due diligence to identify material exposures, compliance gaps and uncertain positions that may affect an acquisition, disposal, investment or restructuring. Our findings support transaction evaluation, contractual protections, negotiations and post-transaction remediation planning.

We advise on the tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, disposals, restructurings and related funding arrangements. Our work may address income tax, capital gains tax, VAT, securities transfer tax, withholding taxes, debt funding and cross-border considerations as part of the broader transaction process.

We provide coordinated support across the tax registrations and recurring filing obligations applicable to an organisation or individual. This may include submission calendars, eFiling administration, return preparation, assessment reviews, compliance-status monitoring and routine SARS correspondence.

We assist registered vendors with VAT registrations, return preparation, reconciliations and related advisory matters. Our support may cover input and output tax, documentary requirements, zero-rated and exempt supplies, apportionment, imported services and SARS verification or refund processes.
